When a college of Engineering was opened at the University of Texas at San Antonio, Janet was able to fulfill her lifelong dream of becoming a Mechanical Engineer. While at the university, she was in the honors program, listed in the Who's Who among students in American Colleges and Universities, was inducted into the Engineering Honor Societies Alpha Lambda Delta and Alpha Chi and worked as a lab assistant on various thermodynamics research projects. She published a paper on Automated Non-Adiabatic Low Temperature Calorimeters. Janet graduated Summa Cum Laude in Mechanical Engineering.
